What is the difference between translation and interpretation, between a translator and an interpreter?

Quite simply, the translator writes, the interpreter speaks.
Translation is used for written multilingual communication. Translators translate written documents from a foreign language to their native tongue and return them in the same format.

Interpreting is used for international oral communication. Interpreters are physically present at conferences, meetings, seminars,… and replicate orally what is said in a foreign tongue by the speakers.
